What Happens when your Success Begets Organizational Growing Pains?

The Opportunity
Wind at their backs and the sun shining on their faces: a growing creative agency found itself experiencing rapid growth and outsized success in the marketplace.  But its leaders could sense a bit of turbulence ahead and feared their strategy, operating model, and organizational capabilities weren’t properly aligned to withstand the bumps.

The Effort
Cutting through the chaos, the first step was to very clearly define and confirm the specific work outcomes the organization was trying to achieve.  Once clarified, those outcomes were distilled into key activities to be completed by the organization, organizational capabilities required to complete those activities, and employee skills and knowledge required to bring those capabilities to bear.

A Kaleidoscope Perspective
Like a first suit, a first apartment, or your Pac Man lunch box, operating models and organizational designs are things we should probably retire and refresh as we mature and find success.  Finding alignment between strategy, activities, and capabilities is the core enabler to the realization of an organization’s potential.  You need a partner who can cut out the noise, bring clarity to target outcomes, and challenge you to make important grown-up decisions.  Oh, and go ahead and keep the lunch box…Pac Man rocks.
